More Than an Internship:
Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders in Men’s Health
Happy Memorial Day Weekend from Men’s Health Network
As we head into Memorial Day weekend, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on what this day truly means. It’s more than just the unofficial start of summer—it’s a time to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. From all of us at Men’s Health Network, we salute their sacrifice and legacy.

On June 2, 2025, Men’s Health Network will welcome twelve new interns to its Washington, D.C. office for the summer rotation—an exciting moment for the organization and a pivotal step for students eager to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to real-world public health work. But this isn’t just another summer internship.
It’s a launching pad.
A Mission-Driven, Real-World Experience
The Men’s Health Network Internship Program immerses students in the day-to-day work of a national nonprofit focused on advancing men’s health.
Interns contribute meaningfully to:
- Community health events and education
- Policy research and legislative outreach
- Digital media production and publishing
- Donor engagement and outreach campaigns
- Event logistics and public health programming
Every week brings new opportunities to learn, collaborate, and contribute to our mission.
Diverse Academic Backgrounds, Shared Purpose
Our summer interns represent a range of disciplines, bringing different strengths to our team:
- Public Health and Community Health majors focus on prevention, equity, and outreach
- Political Science and Pre-Law students support public policy, advocacy, and legislative efforts
- Business, Marketing, and Administration students assist with logistics, inventory, and donor engagement
- Communications, Journalism, and Media students craft our message through writing, social media, and video production
This interdisciplinary environment builds well-rounded professionals and encourages collaboration across specialties.
Hard Skills Interns Will Build
MHN interns develop career-ready, practical skills through daily tasks and project ownership.
These include:
- Technical Writing: Reports, blog posts, donor letters, and policy briefs
- Digital Marketing: Social media content creation and scheduling
- Web Publishing: Managing blogs on WordPress and scheduling content with Hootsuite
- CRM Management: Updating contact records and tracking outreach
- Event Support: Coordinating health fairs, preparing materials, and staffing booths
- Media Production: Writing scripts and editing video content
- Data Analysis: Interpreting survey results and public health metrics
- Email & Phone Outreach: Campaign messaging, cold calling, and partner follow-up
- Project Management: Organizing timelines and meeting deadlines
- Inventory Fulfillment: Coordinating logistics for store orders and donor mailings
These experiences offer more than exposure—they give interns finished products and deliverables they can proudly showcase.
Soft Skills That Make Strong Professionals
Equally valuable are the interpersonal and leadership skills interns strengthen over the course of their time with MHN:
- Professional communication with staff, partners, and external stakeholders
- Time management across multiple concurrent projects
- Problem-solving and flexibility in a fast-paced nonprofit setting
- Adaptability to changing campaign needs or event logistics
- Collaboration across roles, departments, and disciplines
- Leadership in taking initiative and owning assignments
- Public speaking and presentation of updates or ideas
- Empathy in addressing sensitive health issues respectfully
- Networking with professionals in nonprofit and health policy
- Attention to detail when proofreading, formatting, or editing content
Interns aren’t expected to arrive with all these skills—they’re expected to develop them. Mentorship, feedback, and peer collaboration ensure growth throughout the summer.
What Makes MHN’s Internship Different
Unlike internships where students observe from the sidelines, MHN’s program:
- Offers structured onboarding and weekly check-ins
- Provides real projects aligned with national campaigns and public events
- Encourages cross-training between disciplines and tasks
- Includes mentor support and consistent feedback
- Connects interns to live programming in D.C. and nationally
Interns are not just learning—they’re contributing directly to campaigns like: - Men’s Health Month (June)
- Prostate Cancer Awareness Month (September)
- Testicular Cancer Awareness
- Wear Blue Day and other outreach events
Purpose-Driven Interns, Policy-Driven Work
What unites our interns—no matter their major—is their shared commitment to:
- Addressing the Lifespan Gender Gap, where men die on average six years earlier than women
- Supporting public health campaigns that meet men where they live, work, play, and pray
- Promoting awareness, early detection, and preventive care for men and boys
- Advancing nonpartisan health policy focused on real outcomes
They believe that men’s health matters—and they’re ready to take action.
From the Director
“We built this internship program to train the next generation of nonprofit and public health professionals,” says Jennifer Thompson, Director of Communications at MHN.
“Interns here don’t observe—they contribute. They finish this program with a deeper understanding of men’s health, a stronger professional skillset, and clarity about the kind of work they want to do next.”
Summer 2025: A New Chapter Begins
Twelve students will begin their MHN journey on June 2, 2025, each bringing fresh energy, insight, and passion to our team. Some are local to the D.C. area; others are traveling from across the country to take part. They’ll be supporting key programs in advocacy, health communication, public education, and nonprofit operations.
Their contributions will be felt long after the summer ends.
